Cura

1. William Turner
It was the time when the stormbird was arriving. Deep among the remnants of subtropical rainforests where dingoes howled even during the day time. In these dark woods it was also common to see these native canines hanging like strange fruit from large fig trees.

Most of the time the darkness of the heavens was only pierced by the flickering of stars in this area.

One night the star-strewn sky turned into an electrical storm. Bolts of lightning struck the mountain chains. Cura who lived in a tiny hut at the bottom of these mountains was aware that she lived in times of abrupt, persistent ecological regime shifts made by humankind. The time of the comfortable Holocene Epoch, the Age of Man was over. The cushy home of humans was irretrievably disappearing.

2. Lovis Corinth
Here be dragons
She knew that in ever shorter intervals firestorms fuelled by pollution came like a dragon out of the sky, transferring heat and energy and unloading it into human-made clouds that would spin above the fires and erase all life below it. Such a bush fire was in her view, just up the mountains where the ancient Gondwana rainforest remnants were melting into the soil, water, ocean and the stratosphere. No slayer of serpents or dragon slayer hero would come along to douse this mega combustion.

It was when a massive crack of thunder shook the ground, that a berserk dog-like-thing pounced against the insect screen door barking and howling so that even the sound of thunder disappeared under that noise. The creature had the fiery eyes of Blake’s Tyger and huge canine teeth. Its frantic movements were as if it desired to jump out of its skin. With each new thunderbolt it then appeared to metamorphose into a crouching and submissive animal on the human's doorstep seeking a safe harbor from the severe storm. At times it was showing the white in its eyes and they seemed to say 'Gimme shelter hooman!'
4. Francisco Goya, "Literary animal"
Cura was overcome by an uncanny feeling about this seemingly amorphous creature that came out of nowhere. Its presence and behaviour oscillated from pet dog to a stray, to hybrid or something unknown to her. The ambience and interaction had the certainty and ambiguity of a cloud. She decided on the spooky feeling of the 'wolves are at the door'. She was stunned.

The woman lived in a formless mass of green stuff called the 'bush' that was filled with creepy-crawlies. The small rivers in the area of Terra Incognita were called 'Never Never' or just 'Unnamed Creek'. No one had bothered putting names on things yet and no one noticed the disappearance of word-less things. Previous ancient stories of the landscape were made to fade out of the knowledge system.

5. Eugène Guérard
This little remnant ecotope was an island in a gigantic sea of mono-culture. The cultural landscape of a blank slate was manufactured with the aid of fossil fuels and a good dash of toxins where the extraction of resources was the raison d'être. The conversion and near erasure of local ecosystems and their guardians had led to a 'loss' of a life-sustaining diversity.  Settler culture brought their alien oversized baggage of weedy species, domesticated and invasive animals and set them loose against the survivors.

Ecocide was a way of being-in-the-world, a mind-set for the expanding masters of the universe that always planned to move on and grab some more. Starting life as kleptoparasites, the developing primates went forth and plundered till they reached the edge of their 'petri dish' today. Omnicide is an optional choice now.

Cura swam against the current, she took care of the self and had a devotion to and solicitude for all other holobionts.  She was in awe, sheer wonder, about ‘the physical basis of life’, the protoplasm, the building plan of the cosmic order and the web that connects all of life.  Her ethics of care extended especially to the endemic flora and fauna that had been so vandalised as mere stuff. The disproportionate growth of organisms alien to the ecosystem had to be rolled back. It simply meant arriving in country as a non-indigenous settler in the 21st century.

Cura's worried mind sprang back into action "OMG 'I am stuck with a dog , - a dependent pet'. Where is the owner, the ranger, the pound? But most of all her concern was for the next day when all the regular cohabitants would come into the day and this unpredictable canine would occupy the space and time. Maybe next morning she could contact far away neighbours and find out who let their dog loose.

She was aware that in the 'dog-eat-dog' world  the essence of 'humanness' was measured by how one stood towards dogs and sometimes children. The common parlance was: "Never trust a person who doesn't like dogs."or "If you want a friend (in Washington), get a dog."

Worrying
In her mind she visited the known pet enthusiasts in the area. In her doze she came face to face with a dragon that was the black dog of the system

6. Ferdinand Hodler
There was the one with four large pet dogs and a large menagerie of ungulates. The once cute fluffy puppies had outgrown the kids as toys. The teens transitioned to peers and the dog pack now roams the home of the koalas at night. The nightly noise trespassing from their barking exceeds their masters' borders, robbing humans of their sleep and nocturnal wildlife of a safe home.

The ruling Victorian elite sparked the fashion for lap dogs. Later pet ownership became a generalised feature of the bourgeois family model in the West. While two generations ago dogs were chained to a kennel or worked with livestock, the beasts had now snuggled up into the humans' beds and were kissed intimately. The culture industry cashed in on the needs of households with a list of films with canine stars, fuelling the desire for more pet ownership.

By now 62% of Australian households own a pet and spend A$12.2 billion on their furry companions. (source) The meat required is mostly repurposed Australian wild animals. Living in one of the most bio-diverse continents with a world record of species extinction, it is a choice to promote a monoculture of introduced species over Australian endemic species. Margaret Mead once told James Baldwin about the interspecies divide: "The Northern identity is dependent upon whom you can keep out". (source)

7. Paul Klee, featherless biped
And then there is the household with the two white fluffy dysgenic beings that can not breathe, but  yap - all day when they are left alone for the duration of a work day. Maybe they are lucky as many family companions are dumped in the holiday seasons as excess baggage. Or when the going gets tough the inconvenient load is donated to the bush.

The world is their latrine.
Many pet enthusiasts acquire special purpose-fitted combustion engines so that they can drive their dogs to scenic locations to deposit their excreta. Part of the quality time with their pets is for them to go free-range in the wild. A restrained frolicking in nature is unthinkable. The dogs are always off the leash encroaching on wild creatures' habitats or other people's places. On the many no-dogs-beaches one can count more off-leash dogs than shorebirds. Local wildlife and humans are repelled by the pathogenic faeces left in their paths. Even drink fountains in parks double up to wash the bottom of dogs.

If one sees a human being taken out on a leash by a dog it is usually for the concern of the well being of the pet and not other passing beings. Dog-free walking or cycling people are usually not granted the courtesy of personal space integrity. Dogs charge at people and jump at them. "They just want to play" it goes. For many this game of non reciprocity ends in a one sided mauling.

Mistaken as nature
In Western culture the dog stands for nature. The well meaning animal owner demonstrates their love for nature by pampering the dog, or better a pack of them, thereby showing their humanity. The natural order appears wild and apparently without rules. Complexity is simplified into a reliable and predictable relationship of master and dependent. An asymmetrical relationship where the other, unlike wildlife, is effortlessly available. The property owner is rewarded with a soothing unconditional love of someone who doesn't talk back.

8.  Lovis Corinth
The strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is the „moral schizophrenia“ of meat consumption. The daily industrial mass torture and extinguishing of non human animals. Invisible and untraceable supply chains deliver livestock or wildlife through the mincer. The well meaning consumer is afflicted by cognitive dissonance when cracking open another tinnie of roo or tuna for their best friend while fading out the exploitation of the vulnerable creatures. The ecological “pawprint” of domestic dogs places them with cats and rodents as the world's most damaging invasive mammalian predators. (source)

Soon after we left our primate niche we realised that we were a deficient being. (Arnold Gehlen) Megafauna, cave bears and wolves among others had superior weapons to us. It was not the wolfe's better fangs, but their cooperative pack hunting strategies. By domesticating the skills of the wild gray wolf (Canis lupus) the omnivore human in alliance with the carnivorous canine became the most powerful hunter. Neanderthals, Denisovans and megafauna disappeared and the surviving large predators were kept at bay till today.

In this constant cohabitation and co-evolution both species domesticated each other. The primates lived in a brutal hierarchical structure, while the rules of conduct were cooperatively agreed upon in the wolf pack. The leader of the group is not a despot but sets limits in their group. The domesticated wolves became wanderers between two worlds, shapeshifting from human society to a wolf-like being in cute Chihuahua clothing.

9. Paul Klee
A panacea
The wolves like other animals had to serve the 'pinnacle of creation' for many purposes. From hunting, herding livestock, protecting property, utilisation in lab experiments, shot into space, sniffing for explosives, illegal drugs, wildlife scat, currency, and blood. Hero dogs sell products and serve as therapeutic crutches for the fading human's mental resilience.

In 1542 the Spanish missionary Bartolomé de Las Casas wrote a A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies. (PDF) He reported how the indigenous peoples and black slaves of Latin America were chased and fed to the dogs by the colonisers, sometimes even for 'sport'.

In Decisive Moments in History, Escape to Immortality Stefan Zweig described how the Spanish conquistadors used dogs to tear the bodies of bound indigenous people apart.

The act of hunting with dogs entailed violence against other beings then and now. In the Europeanisation of the globe the dog served to keep wildlife out. 

'The Dogs that Made Australia' are deeply ingrained in the national psyche. British colonial settler cultures brought their baggage of dogs, horses and guns to the hunt. "Hunting dogs soon became incredibly valuable in the colonies, trained for the purpose of killing and sold at high prices. Hunting for recreation was a way of consolidating settler ownership of large pastoral properties; it was a triumphant announcement of the absolute dispossession of Aboriginal people and the end of the frontier...The kangaroo hunt (was) a formative experience for a young male settler, a colonial rite of passage." (source) "Europeans had almost wiped out emus within 25 years of arriving in Van Diemen's Land." (source)

The dog as a weapon was probably not just used to clear the land of Australian endemic fauna but most certainly played a role in the terror and genocide of Indigenous Australians.

Untill today dogs have continued to play a role in a post-colonial racial discourse. In southern Africa, the canines are divided into 'native dogs' and 'white settlers' 'pet' dogs. In Australia there are settlers' pets and working dogs and on the other hand there is the 'native dog', the dingo, which is treated as a pest. Pastoralists who made the thylacine extinct continue their eradication work on the native dingoes, known as 'wild dogs' today. Trapped dingoes are mauled by settler dogs, while their masters yell “Get it!”. (source) Hunting pig dogs, in packs of nine 'flush out' not just feral pigs but endemic wildlife. Even domesticated pigs on private properties are torn apart by hunting dogs. Pets on lifestyle blocks and suburbia do their bit to keep Australian animals at bay.

10. Adalbert Stifter
In Afro-Dog, Blackness and the Animal Question, Bénédicte Boisseron investigates why white America cares more about pets than about black people. Police dogs are used against protesters during the civil rights movements. Threats of “vicious dogs and ominous weapons” against (Afro American) protesters are omnipresent.

In today's asymmetrical war context in Afghanistan, an Australian dog handler lets a patrol's assault dog chew on a dead man's head and the animal's handler says "Let him have a taste." (source)

In Nazi concentration camps in the 20th century, crimes against humanity were also conducted by dogs handlers. Many people on death marches in history were rounded up by dogs and their handlers.

Reality has no chance under the doona
In Cura's sleepless night all these demons snuck from under her bed and fought off peace of mind. Cura ended her nocturnal reality attack with the fading of darkness. The 4 am Yellow Robins pinged in the daylight and ended her doze. She hesitated to approach the front door afraid to find the canine beast that triggered the torment still at her doorstep. Having to confront it again face to face, looking it in the eyes. But it was gone! With a sigh of relief, worry could end and a new day could start populated with all the regular cohabitants.

11.Hieronymus Bosch
Cura grabbed a book and pursued her regular birding from the window. The Eastern Whip Bird couples were performing duets by exchanging whip crack calls. The Green Catbird rarely seen in the camouflaged foliage emitted a loud cat meowing also reminiscent of a toddler crying.  The Satin Bowerbirds were aggregating. Male gangs of Bowerbirds gorged hot chillies and picked pretty flowers for their architectural designs to impress the females and competitors. The male Regent Bowerbird's plumage blended in with the citrus. Golden Whistlers patrolled their area with loud vocalisation. The Eastern Spinebills got a drink before the Lewin’s Honeyeaters intervened. Blue Wrens hopped in large groups through the ferns. Large groups of Firetails took collective baths. Out of the blue, flocks of hundreds of Scarlet Honeyeaters were grazing on the Syzygium paniculatum flowers. Amongst all that a mass of little brown birds. Small groups of Glossy Black-Cockatoos could be heard squeaking and cracking Allocasuarina fruit. Higher in the canopy, the Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove and the Wompoo Fruit-Dove could be heard but rarely seen. The Bar-shouldered Doves took off with the slightest sound. Waddling along was the Emerald Dove that likes a long foot bath with a view. Nervous plump Wonga Pigeon couples walked by and peeped into windows. The Brush-turkey was re-arranging the leaf litter. The female Paradise Riflebird rarely makde an appearance.

By the time the sun had warmed the tiles and it was time for her first cup, a cavalcade of Lace Monitors of all sizes were doing their crocodile walk across the front door. The larger lizards brought associations of the ancient seven-metre-long Goanna, Megalania that lived 40,000 years ago. The shy Land Mullet dashed noisily out of the sun with the slightest movement. Egernia Skinks scuffled along edges and Blue-tongue Lizards flattened under the Midgin bushes. The Eastern Water Dragon was snapping up the neighbour's livestock, the honeybees. Tree snakes rustled through the understorey when the pythons were absent. Pythons of all sizes met up and shed their skins on the verandah beams.

Cura immersed herself in the daily sound ecology of birds and reptiles. She looked up from her book and really appreciated the ecological assemblage that was possible without introduced pets, livestock or neophytes. It is magic to see how the omission of introduced species allows endemic diversity to flourish as a system. 'Living with wildlife' brochures often sounds like, living with diabetes or TB. Narration of the rich biodiversity of Australia is often relegated to kids' fairyland or First Nation narratives. Occasionally Australian icons come in handy as fundraisers.

One species takes all
A pox called man (Nietzsche) is running amok in their one and only home. The new landlords' insatiable system is on the path to the annihilation of nature's Wunderkammer and their own species.  A web of perpetrators, victims, spectators and witnesses act as agents in this devastation. The radical and rapid planetary transformation known as the Anthropocene is calling into question the preconditions of existence for all the beings that have evolved on this planet for millions of years. The uncanny (un-heimliche) end game of homelessness (un-heimische) in a world of scaffoldings, rigs and prosthesis steers towards a novel ecosystem (technosphere).

"All Who Follow in Our Wake" will be deprived of the right to unfold their potentialities. Trauma is the generalised condition that is experienced by all living beings as they progress in a collapsing system. The state of living becomes a path between sheer survival or extinction, a journey between Scylla and Charybdis. The wise man's sleep of reason has produced many monsters in our lifeworld and in the global ecology (Greek: οἶκος, "house") in the last decades. Many are mourning the violent extermination. Adriana "Cavarero proposes the name "horrorism" for those forms of violence that are "crimes" which offend the human condition at its ontological level... Horrorism is, so to speak, a radical rejection of care". (source)

For our species it is time for (un-)learning and transforming our stewardship of our home and relationships to all other beings. The option is between care or violence.

Putting the home and the self under the hammer Pt. II

Warehouse logistics topography
Travelling in different countries one encounters the ever-same standardized landscapes of shopping malls, car parks and highways, airports, golf courses, and exclusive eco-holiday resorts. These spaces of travel, consumption and exchange have become ‘non-places’, ruthlessly homogenised. (Marc Augé) Once it was thought that infrastructure existed to service human dwellings. By now cities and suburbs are like a byproduct of the global just-in-time-logistics warehouse. Human housing appears like a side effect of a world-wide logistics system. (Keller Easterling) The human being is the annex to this machine. The order of things seems to be upside down, disorientation is the result in an out-of-control system. Territorial policies of neoliberal restructuring are often made in elsewhere land and dictate the interaction between space and society. In the absence of spatial justice, people and biodiversity are being expelled from the landscape to squeeze the maximum out of a terrain. The highest bidder takes all and wins over spatial justice. The right to the city
H. Lefebvre wanted "to reclaim the city as a co-created space—a place for life detached from the growing effects that commodification and capitalism have had over social interaction and the rise of spatial inequalities in worldwide cities throughout the last two centuries." (source) Till today social movements assert a right to their place. After the formal right to mobility was gained, the right to stay would have to be one of the rights of the 21st Century. Displacement by the highest bidder is taking place worldwide. "Your luxury is our  displacement" (source)
Bottom up-created shared spaces, especially with people-centred urban designs that measure up to the Human Scale (J. Gehl) are magnets for cosmopolitans and creatives globally. In many cities local people have to flee or are expelled by mass tourism, high rents and exorbitant prices. 'Gentrification' is the expulsion and replacement of one strata of resident by a more cashed up group for the sake of profit. Art, culture and beautification are fuelling this process of "urban colonialism." This valorisation process of the invisible hand of the market starts again on a higher level of the growth spiral.
The "insatiable appetite for Indigenous land and resources" is not confined to events of a colonial past. (source) Settler cultures with their mono-cultural baggage of domesticated species deprive bio-diversity of the right to existence. The multitude of live on spaceship Earth is squeezed out of their homes and finally kicked off the planet.



Overtourism
Overtourism sets in when tourists do not want to visit the site anymore because the place is ruined for both locals and visitors. When it has been consumed - it is time to move on to the next location. The Gold Coast for example derives its fame from its manufactured identity 'tall buildings by the sea'. 'Unattractive and overpopulated' the coast has 'lost its mojo'. (source) Many cities and natural sites are suffocating on their own attractiveness.
Intensification, speed and deregulation serve to colonise the night. The 24/7 parties are thumping away il/legally. Musical events are "vast walk-in advertising experiences...they only exists because of a branding imperative." (source) Fuelled by petrol, speed, bright lights, and pyrotechnics the event areas send neighborhood stakeholders packing.

The drive through ' tourist space'  - Scant in man-made wonders
In the absence of any wo/man-made wonders that tourists are drawn to, Bellingen offers 'the drives' through pastoral and natural landscapes. The remnants of 'pristine landscape have been cultured for eons by the first inhabitants. The cultural landscape of settlers is the technosphere. Cultural constructs like the Big Banana at Coffs Harbour, or more accurately The Big Blueberry and extractive industries of the Big Quarry (forestry, mining, water) are geographical high points. The planned Great Koala National Park is expected to boost biodiversity and tourism.

Mobile sprawl
The drive is of course the main mode by which the landscape is experienced via the ac windscreen. If one has negotiated the small drive-through town with logging and gravel trucks rushing through and survived the diesel fumes whilst shopping or having a cup. Then it is the wide open roads that are yearning to be widened and become four lane highways. Road construction and congestion are an ongoing feature of private mobility. Roadkill of local wildlife and fast food garbage line the edges. Locals crying out for more parking and more roads and less potholes could easily be satisfied by allowing corporations to fill the holes with their logos.
SUVs plough their way through heritage-listed rainforest and along beaches. Lookouts and viewing platforms lure visitors out of their internal combustion engines and show them where to look. Driving routes to the Gleniffer Reserves picnic spots are leading to the water catchment area which are heavily frequented and have no toilets. Interpretive Signage directs motorists through the Gleniffer Valley elaborating on Gumbaynggirr Homeland and “settler common sense” history.

"Where the bloody hell are ya... Come live our Philausophy
'Philausophy' is the latest $38 million advertising campaign of Tourism Australia that relies entirely on ordinary Australians and the beauty of the landscape. The dreaming of an all year-round tourist season with plane loads of fly-in fly-out tourists from the Asia-Pacific zone coming to squeeze the last koala or shoot wombats might turn into a nightmare. Deep cruise ship ports, huge airports and self contained resorts run by o.s. interests.  Bakers, butchers and supermarkets would disappear and one could choose from the largest variety of souvenirs, proudly made in China. In a world playground populated by theme parks, disneyfication and hyperreality the tourist is mostly not able or willing to distinguish reality from a simulation of reality. They desire simulation as the created atmosphere can give them" more reality than nature can" (source).

Masses on the move
Tourism is “one of the greatest population movements of all time” (PDF) Once explorers 'discovered' far flung locations in the attempt of empire building for their masters. The wealthy landed gentry in Europe had their Grand Tour.  Then Thomas Cook commodified "mass travel" for Brits and the rest is history. Western tourists flying to 'sunny locations' or cultural heritage sites changed the entire fabric of societies. Under the new economic conditions of globalisation the masses on the move that are with or without resources are part of the imperialism then and now. Framing semiotic landscapes of the self
Through a schemata of interpretation of events and themes we construct meaningful patterns. A system of 'pigeon holes' /slots ( M. Minsky) activates mental maps or neural networks of associations that make up one's knowledge and feeling towards the world. "Schemata of interpretation"  “The schema concept refers to cognitive structures of organized prior knowledge, abstracted from experience with specific instances; schema guide the processing of new information and the retrieval of stored information.”(source) Embodied cognitive structures and interpretation patterns make sense of the self and the world. The frames, or semantic networks have a plasticity. The coherent structure of reasoning, language, memory can be re-framed within the cerebral localization. The recipient's internal structures of the mind can be changed. Agenda setting mainstream media, political campaigns, ubiquitous ads and think tanks flood our minds. Time poor and desperate to reduce complexity, we lack the resources to stop, filter and evaluate our resonance to the information and pictorial avalanche. Story-telling fiction 
The spaces of the landscape and mind travelled through here without CO2 mileage have aimed to demonstrate that language determines thought and that linguistic categories limit and determine cognitive categories and actions. (source) The grand narrative of (neoliberal) economic theory might just turn out to be another story-telling fiction giving legitimacy to the present governance regime.

Incalculable risks
Instead of hastening into more business as usual, one could stop and examine the underlying presuppositions of life.  At the moment we are sawing off the branch we are sitting on in order to sell it. The happy few benefit from the destruction of our life support system the biosphere. There is a lot of unfinished business: Extinction, Hothouse Earth, confronting the silence of the colonial past, inequality, depriving future biota, the 'collateral damage' of mass mobility, the withering of rights and the nation state and a voiceless nature. At the moment we are steering head on into incalculable catastrophic risks on a global scale. (source)

Naming a telos, free speech (parrhesia) and the refusal to react to pressures.

Not in our name!
In various cities (Barcelona, Hamburg, Venice, etc) people resist "turning the whole city into a brand for the benefit of wealthy residents, business elites and tourists."  Not in our name! is jamming the gentrification machine. (source)

Feel real good stories
There is a big market for things that 'Make You Feel Real Good'. From early on a release of happiness hormones: Endorphins, dopamine and serotonin allows one to experience a rush of comfort. In a media environment of daily bad news, 'Happy News Stories' and feel good narratives give one a warm heart or an Orwellian  'bellyfeel'. Even the official Australian Bureau of Statistics is "putting on a big pair of rose tinted glasses" about inequality in Australia and "is crafting  a 'good story'".

Bellingen is a small town presented as a "bohemian town that is heaven on earth". Nestled near the Promised Land in pristine rainforest, it "is so abundantly verdant and fruitful; it literally drips with milk and honey. It's a place so special the fortunate locals...call it home." A vibrant community of artisans, artists and farmers live in "the prettiest town of New South Wales." (source)

Growth: The 'Sky's the limit'
Every place is aiming to get a slice of the fastest growing economic sector in the world, the tourist market. (pdf) N.Y., Paris, Venice, Bali, big or small, all engage in place marketing in a very competitive world market to attract more visitors. The growth imperative is the driving force. Despite knowing about  'The Limits to Growth' for many decades, the all-powerful paradigm of economic growth at all costs has become a 'mental infrastructure' by now. Habitual 'business as usual' and territorial expansion set the tracks for seemingly unending revenue streams.

Place marketing
'Putting the place on the map', or visibility in the attention economy is achieved by advertising campaigns. Branding, e.g. ' I ❤ NY', or copycat  'I love Bellingen Shire' should give the site a unique stamp. Merchants and designers are hawking the 'spirit of the place' in noisy PR campaigns. Iconography helps the designers to 'burn' 'iconic images' of locations into our minds.  This reputation management is aims to grab our attention, shape perceptions and win the 'hearts and minds' of prospective visitors and investors.

Hear the good news about the shire
In a setting of rural ghost towns and cheap flights small towns have to 'spin a lot of yarn' in order to be heard in the global cacophony. With the devolution of government and the free fall of regional and local news outlets, some councils resort to taking things into their own hands with the help of ratepayer fees. Bundaberg Council for example has a free 'good news' website to showcase their shire. Mainstream local media sees its market share withering even further and call it "propaganda masquerading as news". (source)

We are open for business
Various stakeholders curate contemporary conscious sense making tools to relay their message.  Economic chambers and councils release their corporate communication slogans, mission and vision statements.  In a nutshell: "We are open for business". Corporate and local storytelling usually entails founder stories, local heroes and impeccable goods and services. The added value of emotional bonds and mind shares appears participatory: 'we are all in the same boat'.

The good news conversation
Attempts are made to facilitate a mutual dialogue on social media and other means with ‘homo narrans’ to boost popularity. Both corporate bodies and local government aim to tightly control the 'conversation'  to strengthen the corporate brand and the public–private partnership. The stories, brand, image, culture and identity are tightly orchestrated in the hands of these agents. The “who we are and what we stand for” engages feelings and appeals to emotional bonds. Negative stories are a no-go zone, unless of course they could assist in gaining more funding. Real estate, the service industry the culture and leisure industry as well as the primary sector are fully behind an expanding market. This 'business ontology' is a global phenomenon. Locals as ambassadors for the Bellingen or Byron Bay brand
Locals also express their identity and pride of place via public storytelling on multimedia. 'I Love Bello Shire' pledges abound with beautiful jolly people in a "Happy Place". Dream locations of the mum-and-dad-type investors offer short-term rentals that are circumventing regulated hotel accommodation. Happy selfies with sunsets of residents and visitors alike are selling the dream. All join in the choir of hippie-surfer-wellness alternative-lifestyle destinations song.  Pampered bodies and psyches are cocooning themselves in the comfort zone of the 'Bellingen Bubble'. Enterprising mumpreneurs sell an idealised instagrammable lifestyle. The home and family life becomes a cash cow. Dollhouses with housekeepers demonstrate that the slow-living, laid-back magazine lifestyle of white affluenza is possible for all. As a Byron Bay resident puts it: "I know I live in this absurd white privileged bubble".
Other trendsetters, such as influencers also endorse the dolce vita lifestyle, locations and cultural identity via the Dark Social. It is the labour of a staged cultural authenticity, of an imagined community which is to be consumed by tourists and locals alike. Credibility is also achieved by citing celebrities or noteworthy people who live or have lived in the area.


Experience: One wants what one wants
City refugees seek to escape the rat race and congestion of city life and immerse themselves in the "willing suspension of disbelief“ (S.T. Coleridge). Getting away from it all promises to be free of care, taking a vacation from responsibilities.  The offer of family amusements funnel the groups, declared to be consumers, to offers of consumption. The hunger for new sensations, preferably curated experiences, is insatiable. They are pampered by a precariat that is un(der)paid in an unregulated service industry.  Entertainment is performed by 'authentic' song and dance events. The self enhancement in  'joycamps' often constitutes a prolongation of work.

Mimicry
The imagination and practices of the tourist or recreational consumer are always in-formed and pre-figured by what others do, say or post as text or media.  The must see, must do, must do a selfie there is established in a structure of social expectations. A hunger is cultured for holiday locations that are 'hot' on social media, company brochures or TV programmes - the actual location is secondary.  The shared images trigger a reaction to travel to that specific location.  "Based on their photos I'm really willing to come here." They are snap-happy on semi-automatic. Travellers are eager to complete must-do lists of must-see locations before 'kicking the bucket'.  The Earth becomes a mere passe-partout for yet another selfie in mass society.  In the end everyone demonstrates their belonging, their habitus of consumption. The 'I wuz here' - pictorial graffiti literally leaves one's mark on the world and on the other minds. The gaze of the Other sets off a new mimetic chain reaction in language, thoughts and actions in the world.

Gleniffer quilts - a cover for the bed and a landscape cover

Another Gleniffer Quilt and Craft Fair took place in Gleniffer Hall. A large array of quilts was on display. The star of the show was the 'quilting queen' wearing her diamond tiara and demonstrating her 'doodling' on the sewing machine. Sandy Corry's work has a very haptic quality. Here are some of her pieces:

Meat on the BBQ and the car park was full. Years ago the non-quilting crafts had a greater representation. A gang of unregistered trail-bikes demanded attention and disrupted the peace, as it is common in this area.

The landscape cover setting
The Never Never Creek flows behind the Gleniffer Hall and a very small church. The gardens of the buildings 'reject the local environment' like most Australian gardens do. Lichen covered fences frame foreign grasses, known as lawns. A patchwork of Chinese camellia plants were planted in all colours from pink to red. The Japanese azaleas keep to this popular colour scheme too, a comforter landscape. An agave from central Mexico is tended to in a flower pot.


Outside the 'cage', trees drip with epiphytes. Tongue orchids (Dockrillia linguiformis) crawl along branches and pencil orchids (Dendrobium schoeninum) fall like stiff sticks from the tree. Shade!

Nearby stands a very large and lonely red cedar (Toona ciliata). A host for aerophytes and fauna. Did the cedar industry overlook this 'red gold'? Soon after European arrival the cedar forests lining all major rivers were eliminated by an extractive colonial industry. Cedar getter gangs stripped their way from Sydney through all rivers, right up to Queensland.

The cutters would float the 'filet' pieces down the rivers to go to merchants in Sydney or England. The indiscriminate removal of the timber made way for the settlers/ pastoralists.


Most texts (pdf) of the 'In Search of Red Gold' stress the pioneering spirit of the frontier mentality in a people-free El Dorado. The First Nation Peoples, in this case the Gumbaynggirr of the Billengen River are invisible in the narratives.

The Bellinger River Snapping Turtles déjà vu


The Bellinger River Snapping Turtles were almost wiped out in 2015. What is the state of health of their home catchment today ?

"Water quality testing on the Bellinger, Kalang and Never Never Rivers earlier in January found elevated phosphate and low levels of dissolved oxygen at 9 out of 15 sites.

A combination of low rainfall, hot weather and nutrient run-off from fertilizers and animal waste (including humans).

The Australian standard is for available phosphate levels to be under 0.06mg/L but water testing near Gleniffer Hall on Tuesday revealed current levels are 0.37mg/L, which is six times higher." (Post-holiday season 'tourist drive' without toilets?)

Oh my god they forgot the bike parking! Bellingen 'beautification'



The beautified Bellingen 'main drag' has no bike parking, let alone a bike path. Parking combustion engines is on the mind, not emission free parking infrastructure for all ages.

The planted exotic horticultural wonders proudly sponsor plants from far flung locations. (Place branding?) The vegetation has not yet reached curtain size to shield against the oversized heavy vehicles shooting through town. The daisies from South Africa might one day slow traffic down by covering the hot bitumen.
The sparrows are delighted by the puddles that form on the new tiles. A toddler was seen quenching his thirst on one of the many dog drinking bowls. No birdbaths were spotted anywhere for wildlife. The generous deposited dog faeces go a long way on the smooth terrazzo flooring. Pedestrians navigate commercial furniture, speeding skateboards on the private public partnerships (PPP) 'footpath' and hope they can run fast enough to cross the zebra crossings...



The problem isn’t dockless share bikes. It’s the lack of bike parking, The Conservation, 1.10.2018

There is only one bike rack in Bellingen now, unfortunately dog owners tie large dogs to it so there is still nowhere to park one's bike.
